The Nature Of Hepatitis

Hepatitis is a very serious decease that cases serious damage to the liver of the patient suffering from it. Acute hepatitis is the condition that does not heal for up to six months. When the illness lasts longer than half a year, it is called chronic hepatitis. Hepatitis can have viral and non-viral nature. There are a number of viruses that attack the liver. Non-viral hepatitis is caused by toxic substances, primarily by alcohol. Such a condition is known by the name toxic hepatitis or alcohol hepatitis. The liver performs a number of important functions. For example, it purifies the blood and helps digest food. When it stops functioning properly, the patient becomes very unwell.

Notable Viral Types of Hepatitis

Hepatitis A is usually associated with infected food or anal/oral sex. Although it frequently causes acute hepatitis, it does not usually deteriorate into a chronic condition. There exist vaccination procedures that will prevent the occurrence of hepatitis A for life. Most cases of hepatitis A occur in third world countries. They are concerned personal contact, eating raw sea products or consuming dirty water. Very strict hygiene is crucial as well as staying away from unpeeled raw foodstuffs may significantly reduce the chances of getting infected. After the infection has been acquired, it takes on average 26 days for the illness to appear. In some cases the length of the pre-illness stage may last for up to one and half months.

Hepatitis B is the most infections blood pathogen. It causes over 1 million deaths worldwide due to complications associated with it. It can cause not only acute, but also chronic conditions if the virus is not treated properly after the person was infected. It can get into the patients body through blood transfusion, any kind of tattooing, sex, breast feeding or blood contact or bodily fluid contact. The effectiveness of modern treatment of hepatitis B is 65 per cent.

Hepatitis C is another dangerous virus type that may eventually lead to cirrhosis. When there is cirrhosis, a patient has chance to die within the period of 10 years with the probability of up to 66 per cent. One of the problems with hepatitis C is that can stay in the body without showing any symptoms for up to 20 years. The common treatment for this illness is a cocktail of interferon and ribavirin.

Hepatitis D is caused by viroid-like agent which may attack only in the presence of hepatitis B.

Hepatitis E is more widely spread in the Indian subcontinent. People with Hepatitis E are told to rest properly and not to drink strong beverages. There are also some medical treatments available.

For successful hepatitis diagnosis doctors may perform serological tests as well as liver functions tests.

Most common ways of viral hepatitis prevention is vaccination, hygiene and safe sexual conduct.
